1. Carroll Creek Marker
Inscription.
Starting at a spring on Catoctin Mountain, Carroll Creek flows east through Frederick toward the Monocacy River. From the town's founding in 1745, leather tanning, butchering, brewing, and other odiferous industries concentrated along this "town creek" on the south and east sides of Frederick.

Industrial and commercial development accelerated along Carroll Creek after the Civil War and continued growing into the early 1900s. Cheap labor, locally available raw materials, and access to major markets made Frederick an attractive location for a variety of industries.

Today, the industries are all but gone, and portions of Carroll Creek are part of a 1.3-mile linear park, protecting water quality and enhancing the habit for wildlife in this urban setting.
