Old Cannery Warehouse
The Frederick Visitor Center is located in a structure that served for many years as a warehouse for the Monocacy Valley Canning Company, a firm that started canning local vegetables ca. 1900. The canned goods were sent from here via the Commerce Street railroad siding that connected to both the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad.
The Monocacy Valley Canning Company began on the grounds of the Frederick City Spoke Company. In 1894 the spoke factory relocated to Alexandria, Virginia, shortly before the invention of the automobile reduced demand for wagon and carriage wheels.
"These buildings are equipped with all the latest spoke making machinery, from the saw mills to the finest spoke machines, the motive power being furnished by a 50 horse engine and boiler… They are manufacturing all kinds of white oak and hickory spokes, from the heaviest wagon spokes to those used in the construction of the lightest buggies and trotting sulkeys, and have a capacity for turning out 7,000 of the best spokes per day."
