Glen Ellyn's "Perry" Mastodon
On October 16, 1963, an excavation for a pond approximately 100 yards east of here, contracted by U.S. District Court Judge Sam Perry, uncovered a fossilized thigh bone. It was identified by the Field Museum of Chicago to be the bone of a Mastodon-10,000 years old.
It was determined the mammal's weight caused it to sink helplessly into the mud as it tried to drink at the edge of a glacial lake. The mastodon weighed approximately 12,000 pounds, stood 9-1/2 feet in height and 16 feet in length.
The mastodon's bones, recreated, may be viewed in the Edwin F. Deicke Exhibit Hall at Wheaton College.
Erected by The Village of Glen Ellyn.
