In 1903 George Dean Warren, a prosperous merchant, purchased this Fleming Street lot. On April 20, 1906, his daughter Susan Warren married Joseph Engle Shourds, a machinist at Key West Naval Station's Machine Shop. A deed on August 10, 1911 documents the sale of Warren's lot to Shourds for $1,200. Joseph & Susan Shourds Residence 1909-1939. Architect-builder Joseph Shourds designed the home. In 1939 the U.S. Navy condemned residential properties in Square 39 - all were razed or moved, except the Shourds' Residence. In 1941 the Key West Naval Base was re-activated after Pearl Harbor. The Shourds' home was re-habbed for $13,776 to serve as Quarters J, for Married Officers' housing. The base closed in 1974. In 1986 the shuttered Officers' Quarters, transferred to GSA's Post Office parcel, as part of Truman Annex Redevelopment plan, was considered Historically Significant. In 2000, Moore & Spottswood, local accountants, purchased the neglected Quarters J for $405,000. On October 15, 2001, Richard J. & Peary S. Fowler, two Key West attorneys acquired the former naval home for $600,000. The original address was changed from 317 to 323 Fleming Street. In 2021 new owner Jaime Caballero restored the vintage 1909 building for her company Key West Vacation Properties & Realty (KWVPR).
