1. Old Cohn High School Marker
Inscription.
Old Cohn High School was built on this site in 1949 for African American students in West Baton Rouge Parish. A building moved from a military installation was temporarily converted into classrooms, administration office, library, cafeteria and restrooms. The building referred to as the gymnasium accommodated 123 students, a principal (Oliver P. Baham), and six teachers, until two block buildings were completed in 1951. In the early sixties, a new school, (Jonathan W. Vaughn, principal), presently, Cohn Elementary was built to accommodate the vast enrollment until its mandatory closing in 1969. Old Cohn High School was placed on the National Register of Historical Places in 2004 and was demolished in 2014. The land was donated by Henry Cohn and family with a stipulation that the buildings be named Cohn in their honor.
