Inscription. The Sarajevo Vijećnica (City Hall) was designed by the Czech-born, Austrian architect Karel Parik and completed in 1894. The building served as City Hall for a time and then as the National and University Library for Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was nearly destroyed by shelling in 1992 and its invaluable book and manuscript collection was lost in flames. After the war, the Vijećnica was rebuilt and stands again as a symbol of the culture and heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The stone you see here, from the original building, was not used in the reconstruction of the building and is a gift from the City of Sarajevo to the City of Dayton in memory of Ambassador Richard Holbrooke.
