Excerpt from the National Register nomination:
Samuel N. Patterson, the owner and builder, was born in Washington, D.C. in 1818. The family migrated west to Winchester, Ohio when Samuel was four. As a young man he became a carpenter in Cincinnati, was converted to the Quaker faith, moved to Chillicothe, and then to Xenia in 1846. The next year Ellen Newcom, daughter of a pioneer Xenia family, became his wife. They made a home together for nearly sixty years. In Xenia, Sam Patterson became partners with Tobias Drees in a planing mill. He modestly advertised himself as a carpenter but was reputed to be an excellent designer and carver. Mr. Patterson died instantly at age 88 of a heart attack while visiting Dayton on a business trip. He was the oldest working citizen of Xenia in 1907.
