World War II 2nd Army Maneuvers in Tennessee
From 1941 to 1944, the U.S. 2nd Army conducted seven Corps-level maneuvers across 22 counties of middle Tennessee involving an estimated 850,000 soldiers. These realistic simulations of combat involved 25 full divisions plus an assortment of other units. Cumberland University, west of this marker, served as field HQ for most of the activity. On the last night of the last exercise in March 1944, approximately nine miles north of here, 21 soldiers drowned while attempting a crossing of the Cumberland River at Averitt's Ferry. Many civilians contributed significantly to the maneuvers,
