Fiddlers Grove Historic Village in Lebanon in Wilson County, Tennessee — The American South (East South Central)
World War Two Second Army Maneuvers Museum Director Headquarters, Cumberland University
Inscription.
The Field Headquarters - Second Army occupied the campus at Cumberland University from 1942-1944 under the direction of Lt. General Ben Lear in command.
The Red and Blue Armies engaged in weekly maneuvers as close to actual war conditions of battles on land air, and water in Europe during WWII. The maneuvers occupied over 21 counties in Middle Tennessee. The campus of Cumberland University became a Tent City. The maneuvers taught all branches of the army to work in perfect coordination.
Representatives of Great Britian, Russia, China, Czecho-Slovakia, Free France, Canada, and Iran observed maneuvers here.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the maneuvers in Tennessee, Col. Jim Henderson. Ret. was appointed chair of the Reunion. He collected artifacts and memorabilia to be exhibited in the Vise Library at Cumberland University. The collection was later moved to the Hamblen House for visitors to learn and enjoy more of the details of the maneuvers.
The artifacts and memorabilia are on loan to Fiddlers Grove since 1996. (Marker Number 23.)
