1. Indiana Marker
Inscription. I. Colonial Virginia (British) Period 1763-1789.
Before 1755, all territory west of the Allegheny Mts. to Mississippi, Gulf to N. Canada claimed by France. Called "New France" it was divided in two parts by "Halfway: Catholic Jesuit Stone Crosses, across central Indiana, Lower half Louisiana Diocese, Upper Quebec Diocese. A stone cross stood until 1870's N. at Halfway (S.R.1 and Jay Co. Rd. 800S).

After the French and Indian War, 1755-1763, this area, all of Canada, fell to victorious England, who awarded the greatest part of the Northwest to her Virginia colony.

II. Northwest Territory 1789-1800
Virginia governed her northwest county of Augusta (including the Indiana area) from 1763 until 1789, when she deeded the area to new U.S. Federal Government. She made KY. County into a new state in 1787.

III. Indiana Territory 1800-1816
Indiana Territory created in 1800 out of N.W. Territory, Illinois and Michigan Territory out of this when Indiana became a state in 1816.

Population growing in cessions of 1795, 1803, 1804, 1805, 1809, with counties being formed for new state, once the Indians were removed.

IV. Statehood in 1816
13 counties, population of 65,000
After New Purchase Treaty of St. Mary's 1818, all central Indiana opened to land sales. New counties added
