(1813-1873) was a native of Albany, New York. During his youth he traveled to Boston and then to New Orleans by boat. After a brief stay in Louisiana, Hurlbert settled in Aurora in 1835. He later built a prosperous lumber business and achieved a prominent position in the community. After settling in Aurora, Lewis Hurlbert married Emma L. Conwell, daughter to Elias Conwell; one of the early founders of Aurora, being a member of the first board of trustees for the corporation of Aurora. Conwell owned many lots and early buildings in town. The Hurlberts bought two lots from George Lane and constructed their double pile house in 1844.
