1. Samuel Nicholas Memorial Marker
Inscription. Samuel Nicholas (1744-1790) was expelled from this Quaker worship community for founding the Continental Marines, the precursor to the U.S. Marine Corps, during the American Revolutionary War. After the Revolutionary War, Nicholas became a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, an exclusive, patriotic organization that that continues to promote public and scholarly work on the American Revolution. In 1790, Nicholas died of yellow fever and was buried at Arch Street, though the exact location is unknown. The Marine Corps considers Nicholas their first Commandant. In 2011, they laid this commemorative grave marker for him on the property.
