Sailor's Snug Harbor
Designated Landmark
— New York City —
Photographed By Devry Becker Jones (CC0), September 10, 2021
This is the finest group of Greek Revival style buildings in the United States. The original center building, of 1831-33, set the standard followed by the flanking buildings, of 1839-40, and the end of structures of 1879-80. The small Italianate style chapel of 1856, located behind the main building, offers a contrast in scale and design. Captain Robert Richard Randall's bequest of 1801 established this home for retired sailors. Its seal reads: "we who are weary seek a harbor."
Erected 1972 by The New York Community Trust.
